Solidarity this Pride Month: #UnderTheScope

Councillor Orrel Lawerence

Hello,

I am Councillor Orrel Lawerence, member of the People and Appeals Committee.

As we celebrate LGBTQIA+ Pride History Month throughout June, I am taking a moment to extend a message of solidarity from the Queen’s Park Community Council.

This year’s theme, Medicine: #UnderTheScope highlights two important aspects: the incredible contributions of LGBTQIA+ people to the field of medicine, and the ongoing need for inclusive and equitable healthcare for everyone in our community.

We

We acknowledge the historical struggles of the LGBTQIA+ community within the medical field, from discrimination and a lack of understanding of specific health needs, to cruel practices like conversion therapy.

We celebrate the many LGBTQIA+ doctors, nurses, researchers, and other healthcare professionals who continue to contribute to improved public health and well-being for all.

We cannot neglect to recognize the ongoing challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ people, whether it’s access to sensitive and informed healthcare, or the to often refusal to acknowledge their rights to self-determined medical and health needs.

There is still so much work to be done here in Queen’s Park, in the UK and across the world, to foster a free and inclusive society  for all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity; and it is essential that we remain steadfast in our commitment to ensuring LGBTIA+ members of our community feels safe and at home in Queen’s Park.

All members of our community are encouraged to show solidarity with our LGBTQIA+ community by seeking opportunities to learn more about the LGBTQIA+ history and struggles and to amplify their voices and needs.

Anyone wishing to facilitate an event or activity to celebrate Pride are invited to apply to our pop up grant program, where we can offer up to £300 and support to bring your project to life.
