Helping hands, friendly face

Imam Khatib won a grant in January 2017. Iman explains: “I offer interpretation services and advice to the Arabic community within Queen’s park and help them operate within and become engaged in society. The grant money I received helps to fund a weekly clinic on a Tuesday where I offer one-to-one support. This could include interpreting and explaining legislation, official letters and benefits information, helping clients complete claims forms and prepare appeals and assisting with budgeting. A client may have just moved to the area, have housing issues or maybe something has happened within their life and they need help. I work a lot with recently separated women who want to find work, or men who need directing to emotional and psychological or money management support.

I started my service because of the high demand within the Arabic community, everyone knew my number and was asking for help! It’s really satisfying. I became a single mother when my children were teenagers so know what it is like to need help.
