I am Councillor Stella Wilson, Chair of the Place and Appeals Committees.

This July, I want to share with you a significant global campaign that QPCC will be part of—Plastic Free July!

This year’s Plastic Free July campaign, under the inspiring slogan ‘Small steps, big difference,’ is all about the small changes each of us can make to reduce plastic waste. It’s incredible to think that each year, millions of Plastic Free July participants from over 190 countries worldwide are making a big difference by choosing to refuse single-use plastic each year.

Since its inception, QPCC has been committed to protecting and enhancing the environment in and around the neighbourhood. Since 2021, our Air, Environment and Climate Emergency Working Group has worked to further deepen this commitment with the adoption of our Climate and Environmental Strategy and Projects.

For Plastic Free July, here are some ‘small steps’ ideas you can take to make a difference:

  1. Take the Pesky Plastics Quiz Tool (thinkfieldpanel.com.au) to find out what plastics you currently use.
  2. Make the Plastic Free Pledge to share and amplify your ‘small step’ with others!
  3. Sign up for a Make and Reuse Creative Workshops—ACAVA at the Maxilla Men’s Shed where there are three FREE sessions taking place through July and August.
  4. Sign up to be a North Paddington Champion and join their WhatsApp group for updates, events and ideas.
  5. Organise a Plastic Free Tea Break or Lunch – a popular way of making and sharing food, fun and conversations about plastic-free solutions, at work or at home.
