After five years in development, the plan to refurbish an old church in Westbourne and build a brand new ‘Heritage and Learning’ annex is one step closer to becoming a reality.
Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Paddington Development Trust has submitted plans to Westminster Council for conservation work on St Mary Magdalene Church (in Rowington Close, W2 5TF). This Grade One listed building, an example of the gothic style, is regarded by historians as ‘an architectural jewel’. The plans also include a café facing the canal, a new Learning Centre with a classroom and improvements to the fabric of the church itself. Once approved, a full bid can go back to Heritage Lottery.
As well as saving the church as a place of worship, the learning centre would create opportunities for children from all backgrounds and faiths to carry out art and history projects, inspired by the church’s magnificent interior. Adults will have the chance to train in subjects like customer service, heritage management and tourism.
